(Geneva) – UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called on young entrepreneurs from around the world to help ensure that an „ambitious, binding and effective“ global climate agreement is reached when policy makers and government negotiators convene in Copenhagen in December for the UN Climate Change Conference, also known as COP 15. In a message to the Junior Chamber International (JCI) Leadership Summit in Geneva, delivered by Global Compact Executive Director Georg Kell, the Secretary-General encouraged young entrepreneurs and leaders to „help policy makers understand that the transformation to a low-carbon economy is not only necessary, but economically viable and technologically possible“. He also urged JCI members to join the UN’s Seal the Deal! campaign and „to mobilize your employees, partners, clients and customers to support the adoption of a global climate agreement“.
During the Summit, more than 300 JCI delegates representing young entrepreneurs in 53 countries agreed on a draft 2009 Commitment to Action, encouraging JCI’s thousands of local chapters around the world to support the climate agenda through trainings, events, projects and best-practice awards. In a separate commitment, JCI further pledged to support Seal the Deal!
