Caring for Climate Convenes Second Conference of Signatories

(Geneva) — The UN Global Compact’s Caring for Climate initiative today convened its second conference of signatories and stakeholders — an event that included approximately 100 senior representatives from business, finance, the public sector and United Nations, as well as civil society,

Taking place at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, the event featured a number of multi-stakeholder panels and discussions on topics including:

1. innovative solutions for a low-carbon economy;
2. drivers of transformative change;
3. business risks and opportunities; and
4. future plans related to Caring for Climate.

A noteworthy feature of the conference was the focus on the link between climate change and development, including the Millennium Development Goals and issues such as health and water security.

“Coming after Copenhagen, this conference provided an important platform for companies to demonstrate their continued commitment to addressing climate change,” said Georg Kell, Executive Director of the UN Global Compact. “With Governments planning to meet in December in Mexico for COP 16, it is crucially important for businesses to share their strategies and actions, and to encourage more companies in all industries around the world to take up the challenge. Business can lead and inspire Governments to act.”

Luis Alfonso de Alba, Climate Change Ambassador for Mexico, delivered a keynote speech at the event. In his address, he praised signatories of the Caring for Climate initiative for their progressive policies, adding that their voices and perspectives will be critical in helping to advance the agenda of COP 16.

A report of the conference will be issued in the coming weeks.
