Global Compact Launched in Uganda

(Kampala) – Today the Global Compact Network Uganda was officially launched by Finance Minister Syda Bbumba, at gathering of more than 60 business, civil society and government representatives. The launch event was held in partnership with the German Development Service (DED) and the Confederation of Norwegian Enterprise (NHO), and with the support of Fireworks Advertising.

Remarking that responsible business practices and cross-sector partnerships are critical, Minister Bbumba called for “all members of the private sector in Uganda to specifically sign up to the UN Global Compact and partner with such initiatives because the private sector drives development and that is why it is rightly referred to as ‘the engine of growth’ worldwide”.

Among the participants were a number of top executives from over a dozen local and multinational businesses. Lamin Manjang, Managing Director of Standard Chartered Bank Uganda, spoke about engagement in the UN Global Compact and urged other CEOs present to join the initiative.

During the event, participants elected a steering committee to guide the development of the Local Network. The committee aims to recruit more signatories and assist companies in the implementation of the Global Compact principles. The steering committee includes: National Water & Sewerage Corporation, Standard Chartered Bank Uganda, Uganda Clays Limited, UMEME Limited, MTN Uganda, Entebbe Handling Services, Unilever Uganda, Century Bottling Company, Kakira Sugar Limited and International Alert.

The Federation of Uganda Employers will act as secretariat for the Local Network. Among other activities, FUE has been involved in raising awareness and promoting corporate responsibility among companies and organizations since 2005.
