(New York) – Today, the United Nations Global Compact Office issued a new paper elaborating on the governance of the initiative. The Global Compact’s current governance framework was adopted by the UN Secretary-General in August 2005, following a comprehensive review conducted during 2004-2005. The governance model is characteristic of global action networks, with decision-making power distributed across a number of entities to reflect the public-private and global-local dimensions of the initiative.
The UN General Assembly has described the Global Compact as an innovative public-private partnership. It also acknowledged the Global Compact’s special management, support, funding structure and position within the United Nations system as specifically designed to reflect the diversity of the initiative’s stakeholders.
